Porfirio Diaz became president in 1877 and would stay president for most of the next 35 years. He shut down what had really become a bandit economy, says historian Ruben Navarrette. US investors were able to tap into Mexico's many resources, land, ports, minerals, he adds. "Those railroads are the first penetration that makes it possible for the building of a US-Mexican economy"
