The History of English

As always, English today is a very peculiar language as European languages go. What we think of as normal is very often highly abnormal for languages of Europe. You had some verbs where you used to be instead of have and they held on longer than you might think. And when we say someone is gone, we now think of the gone as just an adjective. But actually is gone is a remnant of that French Italian thing.
