The Rise and Fall of Nero

In 62 AD, the Praetorian Prefect Burris died of an illness. His death left a giant hole where moderation used to be. The man who replaced him was Gaius Ophonius Tigellinus. He quickly gained a reputation for cruelty and spent his seven-odd years in office either persecuting enemies of Nero or orchestrating mass orgies. It can be justifiably said that the downfall of Nero coincides neatly with the rise of Tigellinus - he eventually committed suicide after being declared an enemy of the state.
