The Supreme Court Overruled Lincoln During the Civil War
Most parte merriman would only be the first of many legal challenges to Lincoln's suspension of civil liberties. It also set up a dynamic political struggle in the midst of the greatest crisis the nation has ever faced. To varying degrees, each branch of the federal government had a different understanding of how the president could act. And over the course of the war, the courts would do what they could to push back against Lincoln when they thought he was stepping over the line.
