When Pearl is just 11 years old, she steals a cow and then sells it to another buyer for $30. She's only caught because her brother who helped her pull off this scheme is discovered stealing a watch a few days later and identified. Almost every woman in the family is subjected to sexual abuse at some point, including Pearl.
