The History of the Athenian Empire

After 454 BC, the Athenians instituted a new policy that essentially transformed the Delian League into the Athenian Empire. They took one sixth of what was put into the treasury every year as a donation to Athena Polius and used it however they saw fit. By the 5th tribute list though, a significantly large number of islands appear for the first time. This is at this point too, where we start to see increased signs of Athens tightening its grip on her allies. Join me next time on the History of Ancient Greece, Episode 43, Imperial Athens.
