Rehearsals Can Do an Astonishing Thing

Guderian knew that at some stage his core would have to do the MERS at Sedan. So he could reasonably do what we might call a rehearsal, but even then it was a number of months. If you take, say for example, a field engineer company, 21st Army Group, breaking out of the Normandy lodgement area August into September of 1944 - they couldn't conceivably rehearse for that England beforehand. But what they could do is do several night assault bridging operations on rivers somewhere in England,. so that the guys knew broadly how the company commander would do it when it came to the MERSelle. And it came to a couple of months from here.
