What Happened to American Chestnuts?

Before the blight, one out of every four hardwood trees in the eastern part of the country was a chestnut tree. The leaves were used as mattress stuffing and made so much noise that some people called them talking beds. Many indigenous people called the american chestnut the grandfather of the forest. Within a span of forty years, all but disappeared.
