A third of the drugs that are in your doctor's bag or hospital formulary were originally derived from plants. Plants use chemical signals to repel pests and herbivores who munch on their leaves. The corpse plant has this amazing smell, like a rotting corpse. It took decades before one was big enough to flower at cambridge university.
