The first time that the commander of the 6th infantry, German Le Monde, heard about this attack was when the German formations were already capturing Polish divisional artillery batteries. By which point it was pretty much too late to really respond. The only choice he had was to begin disengaging other units and retreating to the east in order to prevent some kind of encirclement.
