The Development of the Decatal Survey
Astrophysics has been the leader in creating this type of consensus report to drive the direction of the field. There was a period of time where there was a great debate going on about whether or not we should have public facilities, public telescopes for the broad community to use. I think that in part, this development of the decatal survey was in response to this,. This debate about whether it was a good thing to have public facilities or not. And because of that success, i think that is why we saw other parts of nassau and other groups start to pick up this a this structure of doing a decatal survey and making plans.
