Philippa's Health Wanes and Alice's Power Boosts
Alice and Edward's relationship coincides very strongly with Philippa's health failing. It does provide a reason for Edward's eyes to wander, that he might not be getting his kingly satisfaction in the marriage. As time goes on and Philippa does get sicker, Alice does get more and more powerful. But I think it's not quite as straightforward as that because Edward and Alice were very discreet during the lifetime of the Queen,. They did keep the relationship very quiet until after the Queen was dead.
