Lucy Cook says people have been wondering about the comings and goings of animals across the seasons for a very, very long time. The great grandfather of zoology came up with three theories as to where birds disappeared to. Aristotle's second theory? Transmutation. He thought that much like Clark Kent and Superman, a lot of the birds weren't around at the same time.
