Is Virtual Reality a Red Herring?
As more routine work is automated the importance of social skills in work grows. The residual that's associated with hard skills is shrunk by work-displacing technology. Virtual reality may be a vehicle for helping people develop better social skills, but also might change the nature of interactions in work to being more real time and less asynchronous. But I don't think that's actually the trend that is going to dominate out of these technological developments.
