On Wealth and Poverty (Saint John Chrysostom)
The Worthy House (Charles Haywood)
The Government Should Give No Alms
Chrysostom never mentions any duty of the government to give alms. Giving should be done exclusively by individuals and institutions such as churches, he says. Chrysostom paints a chilling picture of the soul, having just left the body in terrible fear of judgment. The rich man's request for a drop of water to be placed on his tongue is an uncrossable gulf that separates the rich man from paradise.
