After 18 70, oakland was the hub of the transcontinental railroad. That instantly brought massive amounts of wealth to what had been a tiny little town just a decade before. With this huge flux of money, that attracted industrialists and architects to serve them. And they really went all out. It truly exploded into queen anne's style. They're not plentiful in oakland, but they are about the size of a city block.
