The Effects of Fluids on AKI and LR
In most patients, we are not giving enough fluids that it's really going to make a significant difference in terms of their balance. This is different at a patient who is getting 80 or 100 mils per kilo and then going to the ICU and continuing to get lots and lots of fluids. So what do you have as options for ID fluids? You can give them LR. Or you can give them what we call a balance solution. The problem with normal saline, especially when you give it in really, really high amounts, is that chlorides a weak acid.
