The way genes work is that they interact with each other. We've known this for a long time, but now we're starting having the mathematical tools to show how gene networks work. And one of the things that we're finding out now is that in fact, if you turn off a particular gene, most of what that gene was doing is actually taken over by an instant rearrangement of the network.
