The nineteenth century debate between john stuart mill and william hewell on the subject of scientific reasoning. Their differences were wide ranging and rather complex, says John Warwickshire. Heell believed that somehow the human mind could capture reality independently of any observation. Mill was a naive empiricist who thought you could derive al scientific theories completely from the data.
