You can use FPGAs to really accelerate the market data that's coming into your trading systems. You can do things like if you're listening to multiple feeds, you can do arbitration across the feeds so that only the fastest message makes it into your trading system and you're not slowed down by redundant copies. And then I think that on the next level stuff you do with FPGAs is often like just how do I respond with an order as quickly as possible to a signal.
