When we talk about exposing to fears, it should be at such a low level that it's barely perceptible. If everything you're doing can't even start the process, then that is something for you to be thinking about. I worry about whether meds for fear of fireworks, car rides, etc,. only suppresses behavioral signs of anxiety or whether they actually help with the emotional state.
