China was a mess back then. China was extraordinarily poor. They received an enormous amount of help from japan. Also, they didn't have major defense expenditures because the united states kept the japanese and koreans at bay. So there was an opportunity for them to grow. And also, one very interesting point just to bring up. When you said, and i know you didn't mean it this way, but i think it a point worth bringing up, of the chinese kind of brink, pulling themselves up to do that.
