Major stud farms were located in Frigia, Lydia and Capidocia. The east now had a community of Monophysite Christians living amongst the Orthodox. It was from Antioch that the Monophysite controversy found its origins. As I mentioned back in episode two, the danger for the Empire was that this religious disunity would take on an ethnic dimension. From the east came much of its wealth as the silk road to China could most easily reach the Byzantines via this route.
