The Maiden and the Maiden of the Coco Palm
In the greek instance, it's the maiden, mother who descends into the underworld. In the christian version, the son is resurrected as the metaphysical bread of life. And even the primordial event that initiated the whole cycle in both stories was the lord of the underworld using a plant to tempt the maiden into his clutches. If it feels like remissing one of the key ingredients to the story, persephone's mother, demeter, is actually associated with serpents. Her chariot is supposed to have been pulled by two serpents, just as the serpent in the garden pulled eve forward into consciousness and from there mankind into history.
