Reading Aloud in the Roman Empire
Horace wanted a small audience of alit connoisseurs. He hated the profanum ulgusy and profaned crowd. No lyric poet was going to get an enormous public in rome. People wholiterate did not, troi did not that go on. Reading aloud was very important. The recitations in the time of horace were beginning to become a kind of official event. But they weren't big mass events. They were a by invitation.
