Clocks in the Islamic world were really extraordinary. I tell a story about a clock made in 12 or six for the king of Diabakra, who had his engineer make a series of extraordinary devices. And automaton figures would play trumpets and symbols and birds would flap their wings. It was just these spectacular visions of faith that 100 or 200 or 300 years later, as the West developed what we think of as clocks.
