The 2004 Coup in Ecuador
In 2004, there was a major coup attempt aimed at overthrowing Obeoung. The plot was intercepted and foiled in several of the other participants. They were all arrested in Zimbabwe while attempting to acquire weapons. Subsequently, they were then extradited back to Ecuador, Ogani and faced trial. Mark Thatcher is convicted as one of the main backers of the 04 coup. In 2009, after serving a portion of his sentence, he was granted a presidential pardon on humanitarian grounds.
