The Plataians' Plan to Escape From Athens

Plataians plotted to escape from their city by forcing their way over the enemy's counter wall. At first, everyone inside was willing to join, including both Plataians and the Athenians who were besieged with them. But about half of them had second thoughts, and so only 220 would proceed with the plan. Ladders were made to match the height of the enemy’s counter wall, which they measured by counting its layer of bricks.
