USFL executive director Chet Airheart: "This is just to show how serious the USFL is" The WFL couldn't sustain the weight of its financial burden and died midway through its second season. In 1974, while David Dixon was biting his time waiting for the New Orleans Saints to take off, something called the World Football League emerged.
