The Victorians built a vast hospital for the criminally insane. A lot of our very famous criminals have ended up there. I've written a book about it called Escape from Broadmoor. It's about, for me, a local character called John Straffen who committed a couple of murders in Bath and was sent to Broadmoor as being insane. But then after a few months, six months only, he escaped,. which was very unusual, and committed another murder straight away. They decided the courts in their wisdom decided that he wasn't, in fact, insane after all, and put him in a normal prison where he stayed for the rest of his life for 57 years. He's
