He wanted the party and communists who were doing the work he was doing to reach more into distinctly american routes. This was a common thread amongt the popular front tradition. A lot of communists during the war embraced this idea of communism as the new Americanism. And it's so interesting to me that in his later years, when he's looking back onh time s a communist, that that is the thing that he emphasizes again and again.
