What Is the Pants Story for Open-Source Repositories?

Open-source repos like hdpx are starting to adopt pants. The advantage is that a test only needs some small subset it will only use those. lock files and just locking down your supply chain means you don't have the same left pad issue things like that. Even for smaller repos offer these benefits one benefit that i think is worth looking at is lock files.
