The Fugitive Slave Act was passed in 1850 as part of a compromise to try and avoid war. Abolitionists called this the blood bill after the dogs that bounty hunters used to track down escaped slaves. Author Solomon Solomon gave one account of what it was like to watch patrollers hunt down an enslaved black person. The book also looks at how people saw the slave patrols in that time.
