The Importance of Napoleon in Jewish History
Before Napoleon you have the French Revolution, maybe we can even start a little earlier. During the periods before Jews were ghetto-wise, Jews were confined to certain parts of a city. So Beira, if you were a smart, intelligent Jew, you tried to become a rabbi or Tom McClock and you went to Yeshiva simply because there literally were no intellectual opportunities. Now, it comes to French Revolution, which proclaims liberty, equality, fraternity. Of course, they departed from that very quickly with Robespierre and murdering everybody,. but Beira is at night, and then later you have Napoleon.
