Last year we made a stab at enumerating the number of individuals that worked explicitly on AI alignment which is just the question of if we develop a super intelligent system how do we make sure it's aligned with our preferences. We found that like give or take there's probably fewer last year than a hundred people major AI labs working on alignment now and I think that shook the tree a little bit because people weren't necessarily aware of this. And then in the last like 12 months or so we've seen certainly more people getting into the safety domain in part because of the rise of you know very very large models that show pretty interesting emergent capabilities.
