In so many ways, the story of the Prosperity gospel follows the rise of a certain kind of capitalism. The market itself becomes this object of worship and arbiter of life outcomes that is not to be questioned. As Margaret Thatcher famously said, there is no alternative. It's like when the system is meant to prove itself, it shifts the burden of responsibility away from God and onto the person who has failed to demonstrate the abundant life.
