The Pragmatic Power of Mathematics

When Einstein wrote down his theory of general relativity, the theory of gravity, it took him several years of hard work. He had the idea that if you're in an elevator this following, you'll be weightless. A year after Einstein published his theory, a guy named Schwarzschild was playing with the equations while he was on the front lines of World War I. And he discovered that Einstein's equations predicted what we now call black holes. The theory came back and taught Einstein. So that's the power, the pragmatic power of mathematics.
