The History of Madison Square
Until the 1830s, if you were wealthy and socially prominent enough, you lived on Broadway. West of Broadway was an increasingly degraded district of vice known to history as the Tenderloin. Madison Square is literally where Fifth Avenue intersects Broadway. So it's there that we see a clash of old respectability and new respectability.
