How to Invasively Ventilate a Patient With BPD

There is 43% incidence of BPD, especially in those premature infants who are born less than 29 weeks of age. At autopsy, one can actually see regions of hyperinflation, areas of adolelectasis, edema and some pseudo fissures between them. These patients may require long-term ventilatory support, either via an ET tube or a tracheostomy. 58% of preterm infants are re-admitted to the hospital within the first year of life. 20% of these are admitted to the PICU and 12% end up on mechanical ventilation.
