Pinchon talks about the fact that men just kind of self-destruct when they feel sexually inadequate in this book. He says there are some references to how degrading capitalism can be and he thinks Eda perhaps sees her life as a big Tupperware party where she has time to get drunk but doesn't have any money for it. Pinchon: "I think if we pull out a little bit of it and see it as more of just people who are closely related I think all of those people that are being described"
