It's hard for me to believe that new urbanism is inherently a handmade and to neoliberalism. Why did it work so well at that time and arguably continues to do so to facilitate the privatization and destruction of public housing? You know, that's a really good question that I'm not sure I do have the answer for. The fact that it probably overstates the impact of design is becoming more, I think, apparent with with the passage of years. But I think that it just contributed to this notion of a complete break with the past in many ways.
Featuring Edward Goetz on his book New Deal Ruins: Race, Economic Justice, and Public Housing Policy. Goetz tells the story of American public housing and then its destruction and dismantling, which took off in the 1980s and accelerated during the 90s under the Clinton Administration’s Hope VI program.
