Why Did Denver International Go Over Budget?
The budget for Denver International Airport was $1.5 billion, but by 1989 it had ballooned to $5.2 billion. Mayor Frederico Peña argued that just the mere existence of the airport would attract tourists and jobs. The location on a massive piece of land, 20 miles out of town, was weird and inconvenient. There was already an airport nearby Stapleton, Colorado.
