The Importance of Higher Education in China in the 90s
The Chinese government launched two ambitious programs in the 1990s to build China's universities into world-class institutions. President John Cimin, who believed in education very strongly, is credited with starting this enormous investment. Peking University and Chinghua University will always have two number one universities,. But what it has done is raise the bar for many, many other institutions to be not just competitive domestically, but competitive in the larger world of universities.
