In 2012, in the development of Diablo III, Blizzard decided that they could offer a better product for those looking to buy in-game loot from other players. This was though typically risky and awkward and generally a bad experience because these were hardly official services. The auction house came out of the desire to legitimize third party trading so that players would stay in the game to do their trading rather than go to third party sites. It made it too easy.
