The fundamental surprise of functional programming is that you can do 98% of the business logic of your application without mutating anything at all. I think that that certainly it surprised me when I started programming in a functional style is that you don't need the side effects. It really does make life simpler if you get rid of the side effects and isolate them out at the edges of your program.
