The Different Types of Motion in the Solar System
Aristotle thought that unnatural motion required a force to keep an object in motion. John was contemptuous of this idea, positing soldiers could use giant bellows to fire javelins. He instead argued that when we move an object, we impress a force upon it which keeps it in motion. This motive force contained in objects was expendable, explaining why a thrown javelin would eventually come to rest. Another important aspect of Aristotle's thought that John critique was his denial of the existence of a void.
