Political Theory 101

CHAPTER

The Utilitarianism of the World Economy

Bentham didn't just want people in his own English society to have pleasure because the principle of utility is a universal principle that applies to all times and all places. I mean, there's a sense in which Bentham's being a bit utopian as commercial society has developed on the back of more poverty in the periphery. And this kind of goes back to Mandeville's point about how poverty and luxury in a sense two sides at the same coin. You need to rob some people in order to give other people more than they need.
