How to Predict the Half Life of a Radioactive Isotope

Why does any one particle decay at all? I mean and apparently it's random. Let me think about it this way like potassium argon dating in geology of lava flows say. The reason it works is because it's predictable how much of the potassium atoms will decay into argon atoms. If energy or momentum wasn't conserved we have no idea what was going on.
