Corey's grandmother, Obatra, was born and raised in San Francisco. She came to the U.S. from Japan during World War II as a 16-year-old girl. Corey wanted to know what it was like to grow up on the other side of the war. He found out about her story when he learned that she wasn't Japanese but an American citizen.
