Diagnosing Thalassemia in Pregnancy

Iron deficiency anemia accounts for most cases anywhere from 55 to 70% of anemia in pregnancy, depending on the population studied. Both alpha and beta thalassemia trait can also cause microcytic hypochromachinemia which is commonly misdiagnosed as iron deficiency. There's two ways to do that either by hemoglobin electrophoresis or molecular screening.
